Curriculum Overview

The Chester Park curriculum is based on an annual cycle of six themed topics. Our approach to learning and teaching is multidisciplinary, enabling pupils to draw on practical skills, prior knowledge, academic learning, communication, and leadership throughout their curriculum experiences. Central to this approach is the development of a strong sense of belonging, ensuring that all members of our school community feel included, valued, and represented.

This topic-based curriculum is designed to engage pupils, staff, and parents/carers through a wide range of creative and meaningful learning opportunities that make purposeful links across subject areas. Creativity is highly valued, and pupils are regularly given opportunities to engage in the wider curriculum, supporting expression, imagination, and cultural enrichment. The curriculum also actively promotes positive community engagement.

Reading is central to the curriculum, with high-quality texts used across all areas of learning to support and enrich understanding. Where possible, these texts are used as a gateway into wider curriculum learning. A strong emphasis is also placed on the application of English and mathematics across subjects, enabling pupils to transfer and apply skills in a range of meaningful contexts and preparing them for life beyond school.

Our school vision — Positive, Resilient, Meaningful — underpins all aspects of our curriculum. It drives our ambition to prepare children for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.

Positive

At Chester Park, we are proud of the breadth and richness of our curriculum. We aim to provide a balanced, creative, and highly engaging range of learning experiences that not only meet the requirements of the National Curriculum but also celebrate the ideas, experiences, and heritage of every learner within our school community.

At its core, the Chester Park curriculum promotes positive attitudes towards learning. By ensuring pupils experience success from an early age, we aim to foster a lifelong positive association with learning and the development of new skills.

Resilient

A key principle of our curriculum is the development of resilience. Pupils are provided with safe, supportive contexts in which to practise, extend, and develop new skills. Through engaging and challenging learning experiences, pupils build confidence and develop successful reference points that support them when faced with more complex challenges in core subjects.

Meaningful

We encourage pupils to have high expectations of themselves and to take an active role in shaping their learning experiences. In response, staff continuously seek purposeful and engaging learning opportunities that promote curiosity and ambition.

Pupils regularly work towards meaningful outcomes that are shared with parents and carers, helping to celebrate achievement and strengthen home–school partnerships. Learning extends beyond the classroom through educational visits, visitors, performances, and community-based activities.

The curriculum is further enriched through whole-school themed weeks, including Black History Month, Eid learning Week, and an annual Belonging Week, which brings pupils together across all age groups to share skills, knowledge, and experiences.

Inclusion and Community

Central to our ethos is a strong emphasis on teamwork, inclusion, and community. We are committed to being welcoming to all families, including those new to the locality or country, and those who speak languages other than English.

At Chester Park, all class teachers are responsible for delivering a curriculum that is accessible and appropriate for all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), with support from the SENDCo where appropriate. We maintain high expectations for all learners and are committed to ensuring our curriculum complies with the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014.  Our inclusion approach ensures that all pupils, including those with SEND and those who are multilingual or new to English, are fully supported to access and succeed within the curriculum. Further details can be found in our SEND and Equality documentation.
